We were more than happy to observe a pair of Oystercatchers on the new wooden platform created during the last conservation camp in September 2022. The pair was demonstrating breeding behaviour and defended its ground against attack by a hooded crow.
Next to them, 20 Pygmy cormorants were resting on one of the old platforms. The Oystercatcher is a rare breeder in Bulgaria and its breeding was confirmed at Pomorie Lagoon last year when a pair raised their chick on the roof of one building at the saltpans. Just like other ground-nesting species, they are highly vulnerable to terrestrial predators like foxes, jackals and stray dogs.
